#23: Pulp Fiction, back sweat, disco, GQ
12 things I've consumed + The Best Thing I Ate All Week

🌝 12 THINGS I’VE CONSUMED
📉 GQ’s 1996 Overrated List
Some perplexing standouts; some of which don’t age quite well:
Designer lesbianism
The large intestine
Rain forests
Vine-ripened tomatoes
Lattes
Gender ambiguity
Youthful world-weariness
Have you ever wanted to write a novel? But then you take a look in the mirror & sigh?
Me, too. Luckily I can kinda-sorta write a novel. Typelit features famous novels like The Great Gatsby, Frankenstein, Moby Dick, etc. & you can type out the novels word for word. It’s basically just a typing exercise, which may appeal to you weirdos who need a hobby.
With that being said, apparently Hunter S. Thompson actually DID type The Great Gatsby verbatim “so he could feel what it was like to write a great novel.” Food for thought.
One of my favorite finds recently. Los Angeles coffee roaster, Canyon Coffee, produces my favorite beans. But while I pick up their beans at New York City’s Colbo, I’ve never been to their LA outpost. Per the account’s bio, someone is ‘documenting the groundbreaking fits at the club (canyon coffee)’
The best part is the commentary. Enjoy:
shorts are either billowing and calf-grazing or microscopic and underbutt-displaying! either way, must be paired with loafers, ideally garnished with white tall-ish socks. stay cool and comfy, comrades 🔥
girl from either the future or from 1999 shortly after The Matrix came out. very cool earbud/ear piercing config. also jealous that her head is a good shape that lends itself well to shaving
last week we told you a wave of cowboy boots was coming. today we spotted two chic coffee-enjoyers both wearing them - and one was a Famous Indie Rock Musician. our predictions never fail 💅
as you can see in slide 4, we’ve had ANOTHER ANKLET SIGHTING—this time with ballet flats and CAPRIS. there has been mainstream resistance to the return of capris but we’re not sure how much longer it can hold…
💞 A History of Everything, Including You
You were born. You learned to walk, and went to school, and played sports, and lost your virginity, and got into a decent college, and majored in psychology, and went to rock shows, and became political, and got drunk, and changed your major to marketing, and wore turtleneck sweaters, and read novels, and volunteered, and went to movies, and developed a taste for blue cheese dressing.
💧 Back sweat
I’m drenched.
🪙 Quarters
In New York, there is no shortage of stunning spaces. The Swan Room comes to mind, as does the showroom at BDDW. Grand Central Station, duh. Bemelman’s with a martini & fries. The Guggenheim, the Cooper Hewitt, & Tavern On The Green (in wintertime).
The list continues.
But I just checked out Quarters, the showroom/event space designed by the In Common With team, which is now a leading contender. Just go visit & report back. Pick up this Orior credenza while you’re at it.

🍞 Loafing
At 94º, it’s okay to loaf around. Boxers, a Brita, & a book.
When the heat scrambles the brain & the sweat stains the brow, just stay inside & savor the some sips of supine wine.
💫 L'Impératrice - Palais Bulles Concert
My 1 hour soundtrack for this newsletter.
Ideal for cooking with chili pepper flakes, folding laundry, or falling in love with French disco singers with cotton-candy bangs.
I’m not really a movie poster person, but this Polish Pulp Fiction poster might change my mind. The pop art design with its primary colors is loud enough to qualify as a statement piece in your private movie theater.
I also like this German Boogie Nights situation & this It Follows illustration.
Stuck in a musical rut? Sick of the algorithm force-feeding you content? Have faith in your fellow man?
Well, I’ve got the website (+ app) for you. Radiooooo is a time machine, a musical portal into any decade & any country. Select a decade, choose a country & the radio will play Nigerian dance music from the 1970’s or a delightfully weird (that’s a filter for ‘bugging out’) jazzy pop tune from Iran in the 1980’s.
Let me know what you find.
✍️ ‘How to Be a Poet (to remind myself)’ - Wendell Berry’
🍑 POLO & PAN - Coeur Croisé (official vdeo)
This is my favorite music video to play when bored with friends & unsure what else to watch. It’s sexy & as one YouTube commenter remarks, “This is the Frenchiest thing I've ever seen“
🎁 3 GOODIES I WANT
🎬 Alamo Drafthouse Season Pass - $29.99
Everybody flexes their AMC Stubs A-List membership, but I prefer the chicken tenders with Hatch green chile gravy at Alamo Drafthouse. Which is why I’m seeking refuge from the summer heat with this Alamo pass.
The pass grants me a movie each day, which means I’ll eat approximately 112 tenders if I am diligent. Plus, the Brooklyn theater has an awesome bar named House of Wax which ‘exhibits a chilling selection of 1800’s waxwork objects including life-size displays of anatomy, pathology, anthropology, and death masks of famous (and infamous) characters.’
My apartment’s overhead lighting is flashlight bright & squint-inducing white. As a renter, I have 0 motivation to invest in new ceiling lighting (anything really, tbh) but I can at least proactively design my next home.
This pendent from In Common With is ‘a two-piece configuration… with twin modules placed face-to-face to mirror-like effect.’ Instead of an ostentatious crystal chandelier replete with faux candles in a dramatic cascade, I’d rather opt for this sleek design. Minimal yet pronounced, this will look great over my next dining table.
Additional viewing: this pendant from Shelter Bay ‘is encircled by ‘disks of genuine Rose Quartz, a natural stone widely considered to possess healing properties and to symbolize love and compassion.’
🐴 Carlos Jaramillo Untitled, 2022 - $8,500
This photo is striking: razzmatazz petals lined with a brilliant blue. A horse rider is cropped to accentuate the dress. Carlos Jaramillo is a first generation Latino who didn’t travel to Mexico until he was 24. Of his parents, Carlos notes: “To them, leaving their countries is a big victory, and because of that idea, they held us back from understanding our roots.”
This photo documents ‘a five-day charrería event in Pico Rivera, outside of Los Angeles. Charrería, akin to rodeo, is as much an aesthetic performance as it is a display of athletic prowess: in the traditional Mexican sport, men and women, dressed in elaborate costumes reminiscent of Mexico’s post-Revolution era, mount horses and flaunt their equestrian skills.’
The context of his cultural excavation/exploration makes this photo really special. I love it.
p.s. The leather frame is so sick.
🦪 THE BEST THING I *DRANK ALL WEEK
Are you bored of talking about the heat? Same.
So let’s keep it simple this week; let’s cool it down. Ash makes us chia bowls each morning: yogurt, chia, cashew butter, honey, & strawberries. Instead of chugging coffee on an empty stomach & feeling berserk, the breakfast balances me out. An anchoring downer to the caffeine, in other words.
We all express love in different ways. Extravagantly so, like in a Lexus commercial during the holidays. But the micro moments are the important moments. Like when Ashley saves the cut strawberry tops & plops them in a glass of refrigerated water for me. I love strawberry water. In fact, it is The Best Thing I Drank All Week. It was a moment of kindness & thoughtfulness. It was a quenching, cold, & faintly strawberry-ish reprieve from the heat. Oh god, did I mention the heat again?
